The most unique structure of the new airport terminal which was opened at the beginning of 2014 is the vault structure with a length of 200 m and an opening of approximately 75 m.
With its architectural design and the engineering solutions required by the bearing structure, it is the first example in our country.
The main structural components, which were 400 x 600 mm special box section profiles, are produced by POLARKON and are also assembled by POLARKON with a hidden bolted connection system developed also by POLARKON which can not be seen from the outside.
A total of 27,000 M30 10,9 bolts were torqued with 35 tons of preload.
The barrel vault is supported by a special tension system consisting of 7 full bars with 85 mm diameter, creating an arch effect.
A structural health monitoring system has been built to provide continuous and real-time monitoring of load changes at the tension rods.
The data recorded by the system can be reported continuously by automation with the software developed by POLARKON.
The system was implemented in collaboration with POLARKON’s business partner Strainstall UK and was consulted by the METU Civil Engineering department.
POLARKON has shown great support while completing the single layer vault roof with a 75 m opening, according to the requirements of architectural and structural needs of the İZMİR ADM Airport Terminal. POLARKON has successfully composed the special roof components and developed the connection details and has a share in the timely and successful completion of the airport construction.
